The Journal of Self Leadership (ISSN# 1545-2700) was a professional, peer-reviewed journal devoted to articles on the theory and application of Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy and topics related to the development of the concept of Self Leadership.
The purpose of the journal was to promote and encourage scholarly and scientific writing on IFS and the principles of Self Leadership. Articles which detailed the model’s utility and effectiveness for a variety of presenting problems, populations, and applications in both clinical and non-clinical arenas were also welcomed.
The Journal was conceived as a means to provide the community of scholars, practitioners, and other interested parties with a forum to report on theory, research, and practice related to the IFS model. The Journal was intended for professional audiences in both academic and applied settings.
The Journal of Self Leadership was the official publication of the Internal Family Systems Association (IFSA), whose mission was to support the advancement of the IFS model developed by Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D in 1983.
The journal was co-sponsored by the IFSA and Central Connecticut State University. Funding for the journal production was generously provided by an AAUP/CSU Faculty Research Grant at Central Connecticut State University.
When The Center for Self Leadership (now the IFS Institute) was created to promote and advance the model, the IFSA closed its operations and the Journal of Self Leadership came to an end.
Three volumes total were published, one every other year in 2003, 2005 and 2007. One final publication released in 2009 was a compilation of all three published volumes of the journal. The pagination was changed for the compilation and the second volume was erroneously labeled 2006 instead of 2005. These differences have led to inconsistencies in citations of the articles.
At the time of publication, the Journal of Self Leadership did not have an online home. With permission from one of the founding editors, Ralph Cohen, Ph.D., the Foundation for Self Leadership honors the work of all the contributors and editors by making all three issues and the compilation
available here online.
It was the editors’ hopes that another peer-reviewed journal would appear on the scene to continue the dissemination of IFS scholarly works. In the meantime, these peer-reviewed articles are now being made accessible to continue to inspire and support IFS research.
